Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with the case of bedhead hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was scrambling out the door, I stumbled and landed all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely late for work.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
